Fragments of a Correspondence With My Father

Fragments of a Correspondence With My Father

How do you approach the beginning of a project?

I do it with a healthy mix of fear, euphoria and inevitability. I’ve long passed that stage, when you take pride in thinking that this is your conscious choice. This is not.

It can be an idea, or an event or a character. In my case I’ve experienced all three. For my full commitment it must promise a relief upon completion.

What is your greatest fear when you face a project?

That I am not going to be true to myself and/or that the film will go unnoticed.

What would you be if you couldn't be a filmmaker?

In all earnest, I wish I knew.

What do you do when you get stuck?

I get mad. Then I jog, read, watch movies and make love. I find these four forms of human activities the most creatively stimulating. It might take a day or two, or, as I’ve realized recently, years of jogging/reading/movie-watching and love-making to get through.
