He is a recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. In addition to filmmaking, Benning is a professor at both the California Institute of the Arts and Bard College, and has taught at Northwestern University, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Oklahoma and the University of California-San Diego.

This film captures the ever-changing grandeur of the Spiral Jetty, a
giant earthwork created by artist Robert Smithson in 1970 at Utah's
Great Salt Lake. January, February, March 2008 James Benning’s Casting a Glance
was shown at Sundance
and at the Rotterdam
International Film Festival.
This film captures the ever-changing grandeur of the Spiral Jetty, a
giant earthwork created by artist Robert Smithson in 1970 at Utah's
Great Salt Lake. The Berlinale also screened RR, a
feature
comprised of 37 static shots, filmed in 37 locations in the USA,
crossed by passing freight trains. Additionally, the Mexico City
International Film Festival honored Benning with a retrospective of his
work. October, November, December 2007 James Benning’s Casting a Glance
was shown in the Vancouver
International Film Festival and the Viennale Film
Festival,
in October. This contemplative work portrays the Spiral Jetty, a giant
earthwork realized by the artist Robert Smithson in 1970 at the Great
Salt Lake in Utah. |
