Accomplishments
Mariano Estrada is a Tzeltal native from the northern region of the state of Chiapas. A farmer and independent merchant, he has produced several documentaries since his introduction to videomaking in 1992. His work explores the activities and traditions of the Committee of Defense of Native Freedom (CDLI), for which he has served as Coordinator of the Commission of Communications. Estrada’s videos have screened at festivals throughout Latin America and the United States, including the Video Bienal in Mexico City, the Native American Film and Video Festival in New York, the Indigenous Peoples Film and Video Festival in Bolivia and Guatemala, and the Abya Yala Festival in Ecuador. Estrada holds a certificate in visual anthropology from the Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social del Sureste.
