While her early works were in film, Julia Barco started making videos in 1990. Her work has been screened in Mexico and internationally, at festivals in Madrid, Quito, Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Los Angeles and Chicago, among others. Her videos have also been included in screening series in major institutions, such as the Thorn of the Mountain: New Mexican Video at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She has a Masters in visual studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technolgy (MIT), and also studied at Cornell University.

Julia Barcos short video Beer and Hankies, which reflects on images of women at a traditional Mexican fiesta, exhibited with another work, Revealing Machu Picchu, at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC in March. The latter screened also at the indigenous film festival CLACPI in Oaxaca in June, and was recently made part of the OVNI archives in Barcelona. Julia Barcos video works Maria Luisa presidenta | Maria Luisa, President and Ramona presidenta | Ramona, President, screened at the Colegio de México in Mexico City in October. The videos follow the stories of several women as they are selected to be mayors of towns in Oaxaca. Mexico
